Nigerian university honours AfDB President Adesina with 2nd honorary degree

ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire, 21 December 2015 / PRN Africa / — Exactly one week after receiving a similar award from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife in Nigeria, the President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina was awarded yet another Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa, from the Adekunle Ajasin University in Ondo State, Nigeria. The award was conferred in recognition of Adesina's outstanding contribution to the development of agriculture on the continent, his passion for fighting poverty and his exceptional pursuit for excellence.

Former AfDB Vice-President Chief Bisi Ogunjobi also received the Doctor of Business Administration, Honoris Causa. The Olugbo and Paramount Ruler of Ugbo Kingdom, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan, was the third honoree with the Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Igbekele Ajibefun, described the awardees as distinguished Nigerians whose lifestyle and achievements tally with the University's tradition of excellence and integrity in their contributions to the development of the society
Adesina commended the university for its effort in maintaining merit-based admissions, providing an enabling environment for quality learning and also for its exemplary scholarships and faculty exchange programmes. “This institution, is on its way to becoming a world-class university,” he said. Adesina urged the graduates to uphold the values instilled in them by the institution and to remain proud and credible ambassadors.

The AfDB President's Nigeria visit also included a courtesy call on the Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, who took the AfDB delegation on a tour of development projects in the state, including the N 1.5 billion (US $7.7 million) International Cultural and Event Centre and a public school in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) also hosted the President to celebrate his receipt of the honorary degree. The evening was an opportunity for Adesina to receive updates from the Institute's Youth Agripreneurs (IYA), a vibrant group of young agricultural entrepreneurs whom he had mentored during his tenure as Minister of Agriculture in Nigeria.
