Fruit farming promoted in Nigeria

Nigeria's government is committed to encouraging fruit farming through the expansion of arable crop estates, reports the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Toyin Suarau. The commitment is in line with the government's vision of making the nation the foremost fruit export country in Africa, while creating job opportunities.

Suarau, who spoke on June 28th in Lagos at a news briefing to mark the maiden edition of the International Fruit Day, said as part of efforts to encourage fruit farming and cultivation of crops and fruits in large quantities, the government established vegetable estates at Agbowa and Iya-Afin in Ikosi-Ejirin and Badagry councils.

Chinese Company To Partner Anambra State In Agriculture, Power

The Anambra State government is set to partner with a Chinese company, China CAMC Engineering Limited on four key areas of development in the state viz; agriculture, power, health, as well as oil and gas.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund has criticised the call to extend its intervention to Colleges of Agriculture and research institutes, saying it would stifle the fund and render it ineffective.
This was contained in a statement issued by Malam Aliyu Na’Iya, the TETFund’s Acting Executive Secretary, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.
The statement explained that the exclusion of the categories of institution mentioned above was in compliance with the TETFund Act of 2011 as amended.

Don’t pay to access agric loans – FG tells farmers

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) on Saturday cautioned Nigerian farmers and associations not to pay any money to persons or group for the purpose of accessing agricultural loans.

The advice came against the backdrop of reports which quoted the APC Secretary (Bayelsa State) as alleging that fraudsters had duped unsuspecting members of the public of various sums of money with the promise to help them obtain loans from the FMARD.
